Persistent Gut Symptoms: Why a Structured Approach Matters
Updated: Sep 22
The thinking behind the Gut Rewire Protocol
By Jenny Simonovski, Clinical Naturopath & Registered Psychologist

The Pattern I See Again and Again
When someone comes to see me after years of bloating, reflux, constipation, unpredictable bowels or food reactions, they rarely arrive having done nothing.
Usually, it's the opposite.
What they've already tried
Changed their diet
Taken supplements
Tried probiotics
Removed foods
Read extensively
Seen practitioners
Had tests
They'e experienced a repeated cycle of trial and error.
The better question
Sometimes something has helped, at least for a while.
So the question isn't simply: What else can we try?
A more useful question is: What would we need to understand, and do differently, to stop starting over?
That question shaped the way I designed the Gut Rewire Protocol.
Why a 14-Week Program?
Persistent gut symptoms can have multiple contributing factors. Digestive function, the microbiome, diet, medications, stress, sleep, hormones, genetics, previous surgery and health history can all add pieces to the picture.
Understanding that picture takes more than a single consultation.
Deep Assessment First
The Gut Rewire Protocol starts with a deep assessment phase, rather than jumping immediately to a treatment plan..
What We Need to Understand
Your history, what you've already tried, what happened when you tried it, your current symptoms, diet and lifestyle, relevant pathology, and the results of your gut and genetic testing.
Better Information for Better Decisions
The aim is not more information for the sake of it. It's better information for better decisions.
Why Test Before Doing More?
Testing isn't included just to generate an impressive-looking report. It's there to help answer more useful questions.

Digestive Function | The Microbiome |
Is digestion functioning as we'd expect? | What does the microbiome look like? |

Red Flags | Genetics |
Are there signs that warrant further investigation or referral? | What can your genetics tell us about areas worth paying closer attention to? |
The key question: Which findings actually matter when we put them alongside your symptoms and health history? No single test provides the whole answer. The value comes from putting the pieces together.
(I'll explore the testing used in the Gut Rewire Protocol, and what each test can and can't tell us, in the next article in this series.)
Knowing What to Do Is Only Half the Problem
This is where my background influences the program in a way that may be a little different.
Before becoming a clinical naturopath, I trained as a psychologist and spent more than 25 years working in organisational development and behaviour change.
One lesson from that work has followed me into clinical practice:
People rarely struggle because nobody has ever told them what they "should" do. Knowing and doing are different things.
The gap between knowing and doing
You may know that meal preparation would help, but Tuesday nights make it unrealistic.
You may understand that stress affects your gut, but "reduce stress" isn't particularly useful advice.
You may follow a plan meticulously for four weeks, feel better, and gradually stop doing the very things that helped.
Or you may have spent years researching your symptoms and find it difficult to know when you have enough information to make a decision.
A good treatment plan needs to account for the person who has to live it.
Why the Program has 4 Pillars
The Gut Rewire Protocol brings all these factors together across four connected pillars.
RESET helps establish a clearer starting point.
REBUILD focuses on digestive function.
REBALANCE looks at the gut ecosystem.
REWIRE focuses on the behaviours and strategies that help make change workable in everyday life.

Although they're shown in sequence, they don't operate in isolation.
In particular, Rewire isn't something we wait until the end to think about. How you understand the plan, make decisions and put changes into practice matters from day one.
The program draws on behaviour-change frameworks I have used throughout my career, including Whole Brain Thinking and Immunity to Change. Their role is practical: helping us understand how you process information, make decisions, respond to change, build routines and sometimes get stuck, despite genuinely wanting a different outcome.
Support Between Consultations Matters Too
If knowing what to do isn't always enough, then support can't only happen during appointments.
That's why the program includes one-to-one consultations, an online resource hub and access to me via Voxer between appointments. Voxer means questions don't always have to wait until the next consultation.
Education
Understanding the "why" behind every recommendation in your treatment plan
Recipes
Practical, relevant guidance for everyday eating, grocery shopping and cooking
Resources
Tools that make the treatment plan easier to stick to in real life
Reflection
Exercises and opportunities to process what's changing
The intention isn't to give you more homework. It's to help you understand why we're doing what we're doing and make it easier to put the plan into practice in everyday life.
What Happens When You Start Feeling Better
The temptation
People can start feeling better during the earlier stages of treatment. That's obviously welcome.
But symptom improvement can make it tempting to stop there.
Why the full 14 weeks matters
Feeling better is an important sign of progress, but it isn't the only goal. The later stages give us an opportunity to:
Review what has changed
Build on what's working
Adjust what isn't
Simplify the plan where possible
Work out what needs to remain in place longer term
The aim isn't to stay on a "gut protocol" forever. In fact, it's quite the opposite.
Next: What Can Testing Actually Tell Us?
The Gut Rewire Protocol starts by gathering considerably more information than symptoms alone can provide.
In the next article, I'll take you inside that assessment process: what we test, why I use several different sources of information, and how those results help shape an individual treatment plan.
Already Tried Lots, But Keep Finding Yourself Back in the Same Place?
The Gut Strategy Decoder looks at something different: not just WHAT you've tried, but HOW you've been approaching your gut health.
It's a free 2-minute assessment designed to help you identify your gut strategy, where it may be helping, where it may be less useful, and a practical next step.
